HP releases the new version of Data Protector – version 7.0. starting on 2012/04/16. The download will be available as usual from the HP DP site, orders for DVD media can be placed starting on 2012/05/01. As always, customers with a valid system handle are able to get the new version without additional costs (Passport account required), current licenses will work with the new version.
Version 7.00 is a complete installation (compared to the patch bundle with 6.21) and the most important feature is client side deduplication. The deduplication in version 7.00 is independent from the type of backup, no matter if you backup a filesystem or a database. An additional feature – GRE for Exchange was added which allows you to recover single items from Exchange. Last but not least, the integration of the Autonomy tools into Data Protector is build into this version of Data Protector.
Hi. I have search hp’s websites and i can’t find any references to hp data protector 7 exepts for pc’s. wht have I missed?
Hi Frederik, you may need to wait some days till the download is visible…
Best regards
Daniel
Hmm – must be a typical HP software division announcement with no information on hp or Autonomy websites, nothing on the blogs either??
They should have stuck with 6.22 – so typical that while still playing catch-up with the competitors then a delayed feature upgrade gets blown into a major revision upgrade.
I’m guessing that they didn’t add support for vstorage file with the VEPA yet? Nor the ability to do fiel item restore from vstorage image without getting screwed with the GRE licensing first? Nor support for backing up AD tombstone file either?

Hi Morten, maybe I was to early with my article… however, GRE for VE keeps unchanged, vstorage file I did’nt test so far. Meanwhile I got the information that it should be available as download from software central for partners.
Best regards
Daniel
Tnx – got the package, unfortunately things are as suspected – there’s still no functionality to do content indexing of source objects at the time of backup => we are stuck with “dead-end-GRE” which means that 1) it is very expensive for the functionality that it provides, and 2) requires streaming back the whole source object before indexing so it is very inefficient.

Hello Daniel,
Do we need any special license to use Deduplizierung?
Thanks
